The Calgary Yacht Club hosts racing events that members and sailors from the region look forward to each year.  The below information includes an overview of the annual racing events to expect at the Club. 


Icebreaker Regatta - June 2-4, 2023

The Calgary Yacht Club hosts the annual Icebreaker Regatta each spring to kick off the sailing season.

Club championship - July 22, 2023

This family friendly event is being hosted by CYC and is open to all classes of boats. This exciting event brings out the best competition among Club members vying for the annual Club Champion titles! This event is free, included in your membership fee. 

The Notice of Race and Sailing instructions will be made available closer to the event.  Registration for this event will open in June 2023.

The competitor meeting is at 11:30am and the first race is at 12:30pm.  

You can register to sail and/or volunteer for race committee. This is a potluck event so be sure to let us know what you are bringing to the pot luck in the volunteer sign-up.

2023 CYC Club Championship Sailing Instructions

July 22nd, 2022

1. RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.

2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

2.1 Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the exterior west side of the change room building.

3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 Any changes to the sailing instructions will be posted 15 minutes prior to the Competitors Meeting.

4. SCHEDULE OF RACES

4.1 A Competitors Meeting will be held at 11:30

4.2 The scheduled time for the warning signal for the first fleet is 12:30

4.3 The scheduled time for the warning signal for subsequent fleets is 12:33

4.4 A fleet shall comprise 3 or more boats

5. THE COURSES

5.1 The course will be displayed on the Signal Boat before the first warning signal of each race.

5.2 The “A” course will be a windward/leeward sausage with a finish line on the starboard side of the Signal Boat.

5.2.1 The “A” course may be modified by the addition of a triangle with the same finish line.

 

53 Course “B” will be either a sausage or triangle or combination sausage + triangle course with the start/finish line in the middle of the lake.  When sailing course ‘B’ the start/finish line is an obstruction.

5.4 The course to be sailed will be displayed on the Signal Boat with either an “A” or “B” followed by sausage or triangle symbols, with each symbol representing once around the sausage or triangle in the order displayed.

7. THE START

7.1 The races will be started by using rule 26 but the warning signal shall be made 3 minutes before the starting signal, the preparatory signal shall be made 2 minutes before the starting signal.

7.2 The start line shall be between the orange flag on the Signal Boat and the start mark (orange pin) at the port end of the starting line.

7.2 2 As determined at the sole discretion of the Race Officer the start line shall be shortened as an aide to increase concentration during the start sequence

8. SHORTENED COURSE

8.1 The course may be shortened at any mark.

9. TIME LIMITS

9.1 If no boat has passed Mark 1 within 20 minutes the race will be abandoned.

9.2 When it is in the best interest of the fleet and its competitors, the race committee may award finishing places to boats which are delaying the finish of the race (on course finish). The scoring abbreviation for an on course finish will be OCF.

10. THE FINISH

10.1 The finish line shall be between the yellow flag on the Signal Boat and the finish mark.

11. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS

11.1 Protests shall be delivered to the club office within the protest time limit.

11.2 The protest time shall commence when the Signal Boat docks on shore and will last 15 minutes.

12. SCORING

12.1 One race is required to be completed to constitute a series.

12.2 When fewer than 5 races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores.

12.3 When 5 or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.

13. SAFETY REGULATIONS

13.1 All competitors are required to wear a PFD at all times while on the water. Competitors may temporarily remove their PFD only while adjusting clothing or personal equipment. This changes Rule 40.

13.2 Competitors who require assistance should wave one arm with hand open. If no assistance is required, the arm should be displayed with fist closed.

13.3 A boat that retires from a race shall notify the race committee as soon as possible.

14. DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

14.1 Competitors participate in the regatta entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4 Decision to Race. The organizing authority, its agents and the Calgary Yacht Club will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during or after the regatta.



Commodore's Cup - September 10, 2023

Join us on Sunday, September 10th for the Annual Commodore's Cup and Tea! This is a family friendly event. and open to all boat classes. The race will be followed by a Sail Past then dust off your Sunday best and join us for a toast to the Commodore, Past Commodores, and tea with fresh baked goods. This event is free, included in your membership fee. 

The Notice of Race and Sailing instructions will be made available closer to the event. Registration for this event will open in August 2023.

2023 Commodore’s Cup Sailing Instructions

September 10th, 2023

1. RULES

1.1 The regatta will be governed by the ‘rules’ as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

2.1 Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the Upper Clubhouse windows.

3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

3.1 Any changes to the sailing instructions will be posted 15 minutes prior to the Competitors Meeting.

4. SCHEDULE OF RACE

4.1 A Competitors Meeting will be held at 10:00 AM.

4.2 The scheduled time for the warning signal is 10:57 AM.

4.3 Boats will start between 11:00 AM and 11:45 AM as per the start sequence posted on the official notice board.

5. CLASS FLAGS

5.1 Class flags will be assigned and posted by 1000 on September 10th, 2023

6. THE COURSES

6.1 The course will be displayed on the Signal Boat before the first preparation signal of the race.

6.2 The “A” course will consist of windward/leeward sausages or triangles with a finish line outside the course on the starboard side of the Signal Boat.

6.3 The “B” course will consist of windward/leeward sausages or triangles with the start/finish line in the inside of the course. The start/finish line will be considered an obstruction, unless starting or finishing, if the signal boat is anchored and flying an RC flag.  

6.4 The course to be sailed will be displayed on the Signal Boat with either an “A” or “B” followed by sausage or triangle symbols, with each symbol representing once around the sausage or triangle in the order displayed. Where multiple sausages or triangles are to be sailed in succession, until the target time is met.

8. START SEQUENCE

8.1 The race will be started by using rule 26 but the warning signal shall be made 3 minutes before the starting signal, the preparatory signal shall be made 2 minutes before the starting signal.

8.2 The starting sequence will be posted on the official notice board at least 15 minutes before the Competitors Meeting. Boats will start at the lowering of their number pennant. Number pennants shall fly for one minute prior to the respective start. This amends RRS 26.

8.3 The start line shall be between the orange flag on the Signal Boat and the start mark (orange pin) at the port end of the starting line.

8.4 Boats whose warning signal has not been made shall keep clear of boats that are starting.

9. SHORTENED COURSE

9.1 The course may be shortened at any mark to maintain a race duration of approximately 1 ½ hour from the start of the first start.

10 TARGET TIME

10.1 The target time will be 90min from the first start.

11. THE FINISH

11.1 For the course A the finish line shall be between the yellow flag on the Signal Boat and the finish mark.

11.2 For the B course the finish line will be the yellow flag on the signal boat and the finish pin. (see section

12 PENALTY SYSTEM

12.1 For the 29er class, RRS 44.1 is changed so that the Two-Turns Penalty is replaced by the One Turn Penalty

13. PROTESTS AND REQUESTS FOR REDRESS

13.1 Hearing request forms are available at the official notice board.

13.2 Protest time, for each course, will end 60 minutes after the signal boat for that course docks. The end of protest time will be posted on the official notice board.

13.3 Notices will be posted within 10 minutes of a protest or request for redress being filed, to inform competitors of hearings in which they are parties or named as witnesses. Hearing location(s) will be posted on the official notice board.

14. SCORING

14.1 Start times and course lengths will be set such that boat handicaps will have been accounted for. The ranking of all boats shall be at their finishing order without further adjustment (i.e. boats finish in the order that they cross the finish line). The prestigious Commodore’s Cup shall be awarded to the first finisher.

Brass Monkey REGATTA - October 7, 2023

On Saturday, October 7th 2023 we will be holding our final regatta of the year. This is a family friendly event and open to all boat classes. The intention is to get as many members to see the end of the 2023 season out by participating in the Brass Monkey. Once the sailing is complete, we head back to the Club for some potluck, social, and drinks. This event is free, included in your membership fee. 

The Notice of Race and Sailing instructions will be made available closer to the event.

You can register to sail, volunteer for race committee, and/or this is a potluck event so be sure to also include in your registration what you are bringing to the pot luck.
